Cricket extravaganza

In May, the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils at Hallam Fields Primary School enjoyed a captivating day at the Uptonsteel County Ground, home of Leicestershire County Cricket Club (LCCC).

Arranged in association with Lionheart Educational Trust’s exclusive partnership with the LCCC, the 52 pupils had fun taking part in a variety of cricket-themed activities, designed to increase their understanding and passion for the sport.

Not only were they able to watch the Leicestershire Foxes in action – as they took on Gloucestershire in a Vitality County Championship clash – but they also battled against one another in a continuous game of ‘glow-in-the-dark’ cricket, played on a giant inflatable dartboard, practised batting and bowling in the cricket nets and enjoyed having their faces and arms painted with cricket stencils.

Also in attendance were the Leicester Tigers, who hosted an ‘Escape Room’ challenge. Pupils were required to demonstrate a range of key sporting values – teamwork, respect, discipline, hard work and fun – to complete set tasks. This proved to be an especially useful task as it educated the children about the mindset required to be a successful sportsperson – the values discussed also tied in nicely with the 6Rs.

After the game, pupils were fortunate to meet some of the Leicestershire players and collect autographs. It was the perfect end to an action-packed day and one that certainly increased pupil’s enthusiasm and appetite for cricket.

"The 'glow-in-the dark' cricket was so much fun. It seemed so fast," one pupil said, whilst another remarked, “it was great that we got our giant hands signed by the Leicestershire batter Rishi Patel."
