Hallam Fields receive Food For Life Award!
Hallam Fields Primary School have recently received the coveted Bronze award from Food For Life.
Food For Life are a organisation that work in local communities and aim to promote the importance of producing food that is not only healthy and packed full of nutrition, but is also sustainable and kind to the environment.
Work towards this amazing accolade began last year. A gardening area was set up at the school and pupils started to grow their own fruit and vegetables. Then, children were able to create homemade salads with their own produce. These salads were then sold to parents and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon eating them on the field; the community coming together to promote healthy eating.
Also, the children entered the ‘Mealbarrow Conmpetition’ and were tasked with designing a three-course meal and planting five of the ingredients in a wheelbarrow!
If that wasn’t enough, the EYFS children enjoyed a fantastic day at Stonehurst Farm learning about the various process involved with producing food. A ‘Master Composter’ also came into school from the council and hosted workshops on composting. The children then used this information to set up their own compost at school.
The culmination of this initiatives and the school’s outstanding attitude toward promoting food sustainability was the Food For Life Bronze Award, which was presented to students in a recent special assembly.
“We believe that children should be educated on how food is grown and cooked, and understand the importance of well sourced ingredients,” said Mrs Palmer.
“We want children to educate the children so that they are able to make healthy choices about what they eat.”
With a Bronze award secured, Hallam Fields have now focused their attention on attaining their silver and then their gold award very soon!
