Leicester Riders Coach Inspires pupils

This month, we were thrilled to welcome American basketball coach Rob Paternostro to Hallam Fields Primary School.

Rob – who has been Head Coach of the Leicester Riders since 2008 and is a valued member of our school community – hosted a brilliant assembly all about the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

He played a clip from one of the basketball matches that took place in July and asked our children if they could identify who was commentating on the match.

After several unsuccessful guesses, the children were eventually able to identify that it was in fact Rob who was the commentator!

He then took our pupils on a trip down memory lane, explaining that when he was young, he only had two ambitions: to become a professional basketball player and to become a basketball commentator.

Having achieved the first goal in America many years ago, it was only this year – aged 51 – that Rob fulfilled his second lifetime ambition.

He likened his journey to that of a pupil navigating their way through school. With lots of complicated names to pronounce, Rob had to use reading and phonics skills to be able to say them correctly.

Rob then shared many examples of how he has used our 6Rs – Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Resourcefulness, Reflection and Reciprocity – during his journey to success.

Seeing how the skills and characteristics we teach in school can be applied to the ‘real world,’ pupils left the assembly feeling inspired by Rob’s story.

A huge thank you to Rob for coming into our school and for sharing his inspiring story with us.
