Year 2 trip to Twycross Zoo

A few weeks ago, the year two students at Hallam Fields had an amazing day visiting Twycross Zoo.

The trip formed part of this term’s science topic – which focuses on living things – and the children really enjoyed applying their knowledge outside of the classroom.

The children saw a multitude of animals – including giraffes, monkeys, lions and a range of exotic birds – but their favourites were definitely the tiger and the aptly-named spider monkey!

They were able to identify the names of the various animals and – by looking at their diets – were able to determine whether they were an omnivore, carnivore or herbivore and point out some of the key characteristic of their habitats.

If that wasn’t enough excitement, the pupils were also able to walk around the Gruffalo Trail which forms part of Gruffalo Discovery Land, a newly-assembled feature based on the famous children’s story book.

An interactive journey, the children were able to walk through the deep, dark wood and meet some famous characters from the book including Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake and of course, the Gruffalo.

Overall, the children had a brilliant day and one that illustrated the importance of interactive learning and bringing education to life.
