Year 1
Welcome to Bear Class!
Year 1 is taught by Mrs Palmer (Monday-Thursday) and Mrs Melbourne (Thursday and Friday). Mrs Smith supports in Bear Class every day.
Year 1 is an exciting year – we understand that the transition from EYFS to Year 1 is a big step for children, and the Year 1 team aim to make the transition from Rabbit Class as smooth as possible. Year 1 is the first year where the children are taught following the National Curriculum.
Phonics is a big part of life in Year 1. Children continue to build on their knowledge from EYFS through daily whole class phonics lessons, following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. In addition to daily phonics lessons, the children also take part in small group reading practice sessions three times a week.
At the end of Year 1, the children will take a phonics screening check. The check is done with each child independently. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics.
In Bear Class, we are not afraid to make mistakes – we believe that it is important to support children to build resilience, take risks and welcome challenge! We tackle each day with the 6R’s in mind!
Bear Class is a happy, friendly place to be, and our main goal is to ensure that all children enjoy their experiences and education in Year 1.
Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday, so please send your child to school in their PE kits (a plain red T-shirt with black shorts or leggings and suitable shoes).
